Lagos Dispatch Rider Allegedly Killed After Resisting Hoodlums’ Extortion
A 32-year-old dispatch rider, identified as Emmanuel Jegede, has lost his life after he was allegedly attacked by suspected hoodlums who reportedly attempted to extort him along the Ikotun-Idimu Road in the Alimosho area of Lagos State. Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to eyewitnesses, the tragedy occurred after the victim completed a delivery and was heading to another destination. Residents alleged that two suspected hoodlums attempted to stop and extort him around the Alhaja area. When he reportedly resisted their demands, they allegedly pushed him while he was riding his motorcycle, causing him to lose control and crash into the road median. He was said to have died at the scene from injuries sustained in the accident.
Witnesses further claimed that the incident may have stemmed from an earlier minor collision involving the dispatch rider and a tricycle operator. The disagreement was reportedly resolved by residents and some youths in the area. However, the youths allegedly demanded money from the rider for intervening. After he reportedly told them he had no money, they were said to have laid in wait and confronted him again, leading to the fatal incident.
Police officers from the Idimu Division later arrived at the scene and evacuated the victim’s body, while investigations commenced. The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the incident but said detectives were examining conflicting accounts to determine exactly what happened.
Police spokesperson SP Abimbola Adebisi explained that one account suggested the dispatch rider lost control of his motorcycle while trying to avoid a pedestrian, while another alleged that some youths may have attacked or pushed him before the crash. She said investigators were working to obtain CCTV footage from the area and gather additional evidence to establish the true circumstances surrounding the rider’s death.
The tragic incident has renewed concerns over the safety of dispatch riders and other road users in Lagos, particularly in areas where criminal gangs allegedly harass motorists and demand illegal payments. Residents have called on security agencies to intensify patrols and ensure those responsible are identified and prosecuted.
