NDLEA Arrests India-Bound Businessman With 1.55kg Cocaine at Lagos Airport

NDLEA Arrests India-Bound Businessman With 1.55kg Cocaine at Lagos Airport

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 48-year-old Lagos businessman, Nwankwo Innocent Onyebuchi, after operatives allegedly discovered 1.550 kilograms of cocaine concealed inside his luggage at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.

The arrest was disclosed by NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, who said the suspect was intercepted at the departure hall of Terminal II while attempting to board a Qatar Airways flight to New Delhi, India.

According to the agency, a detailed search of Onyebuchi’s check-in luggage allegedly revealed cocaine cleverly concealed within the side walls and railings of the bag.

Businessman Allegedly Invested N23m in Cocaine Deal

The case took a dramatic turn following claims by the NDLEA that the suspect had allegedly disposed of his marble business and other assets to raise about N23 million to finance the cocaine transaction.

The agency alleged that Onyebuchi ventured into the illicit drug trade with expectations of making substantially more money after successfully transporting and selling the consignment in India.

Reports indicated that he allegedly expected to generate as much as N100 million from the deal if he succeeded in delivering the drugs.

His arrest, however, brought the alleged plan to an abrupt end before he could leave Nigeria.

The development again highlights the methods allegedly employed by international drug trafficking networks to conceal narcotics in seemingly ordinary travel luggage.

NDLEA Intensifies Crackdown on Drug Trafficking

The Lagos airport interception formed part of wider anti-narcotics operations carried out by the NDLEA, with the agency also reporting significant seizures of illicit substances in separate operations.

The agency said its operatives recovered consignments of drugs, including synthetic cannabis and codeine, with seizures in Lagos valued at more than N3.6 billion.

NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier-General Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), has repeatedly stressed the agency’s determination to disrupt drug trafficking networks while strengthening preventive campaigns against substance abuse.

The latest operation underscores the continuing challenge posed by international drug trafficking and the importance of intelligence gathering and enhanced screening at Nigeria’s airports and other entry and exit points.

Onyebuchi’s arrest remains an allegation at this stage, and he is entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty before a competent court.
