FCT Police Bust Fake Diplomatic, Government Number Plate Syndicate in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has uncovered a criminal network involved in the production and circulation of fake diplomatic and official government number plates, arresting several suspects in a major intelligence-led operation aimed at tackling organised crime in Abuja.

The Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, disclosed that the operation followed investigations into the growing misuse of diplomatic and government registration plates by unauthorised individuals. According to him, the fake number plates were allegedly used by criminals to evade security checkpoints, gain access to restricted government facilities and facilitate other unlawful activities.

During the operation, police also recovered more than 80 fake diplomatic and official number plates, alongside vandalised public infrastructure, including drainage covers, solar-powered street lights, armoured electricity cables and internet communication cables allegedly stolen from various parts of the Federal Capital Territory. Five suspects were arrested in connection with the recovered infrastructure, while investigations continue to identify and apprehend other members of the syndicate.

Sanusi revealed that investigations showed buyers paid between ₦500,000 and ₦1.7 million to obtain the counterfeit diplomatic and government number plates, indicating that they were intended for serious criminal activities. He added that the manufacturers of the fake plates have been identified and are being tracked by security operatives, although they are believed to be operating outside the FCT.

The police commissioner warned individuals involved in the production, distribution and use of fake diplomatic number plates, as well as those dealing in stolen public infrastructure, that the command would intensify intelligence-driven operations to dismantle their networks and ensure those responsible are prosecuted. He also urged residents to report suspicious vehicles bearing diplomatic or official registration plates, stressing that genuine diplomatic plates follow recognised official formats.

The FCT Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives, safeguarding public infrastructure and strengthening security across Abuja through proactive policing and collaboration with members of the public.
