Police Warn Criminals Using Fake Diplomatic Number Plates to Evade Security Checkpoints
The Nigeria Police Force has raised the alarm over the growing use of fake diplomatic number plates by criminal elements seeking to evade security checkpoints and frustrate law enforcement operations across the country.
The police said intelligence reports revealed that some criminals have been disguising their vehicles with counterfeit diplomatic registration plates to create the false impression of diplomatic immunity and avoid routine security checks. The development, according to the Force, poses a serious threat to national security and undermines efforts to combat crime.
Authorities warned that diplomatic number plates are issued under strict regulations and are reserved exclusively for accredited foreign missions, diplomats and eligible international organisations. The unlawful production, possession or use of such plates constitutes a criminal offence and attracts severe legal consequences.
The Force disclosed that it has intensified surveillance and investigations to identify individuals and syndicates involved in the production, distribution and use of fake diplomatic plates. Security operatives have also been directed to strengthen verification procedures at checkpoints while ensuring that legitimate diplomatic privileges are respected in accordance with international conventions.
The police urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious vehicles displaying questionable diplomatic number plates or engaging in unlawful activities. Citizens were also encouraged to provide credible information that could assist security agencies in dismantling criminal networks exploiting diplomatic privileges for illegal purposes.
