LGON Chairman Rejects Aiyedatiwa’s Cocoa Board Appointment, Questions Selection Process
A former Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Ondo State has rejected his appointment to the newly constituted Ondo State Cocoa Management Board by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, citing concerns over the process that led to his nomination.
The former ALGON chairman said he was neither consulted nor informed before his name was announced as a member of the board, insisting that he could not accept an appointment made without his prior knowledge or consent.
He expressed disappointment over the development, arguing that appointments into strategic government bodies should follow due consultation and respect for those being considered. According to him, accepting such an appointment under the circumstances would amount to endorsing a process he does not agree with.
The rejection has sparked fresh debate over the composition of the Ondo State Cocoa Management Board, with political observers suggesting that the development could raise questions about the government’s approach to appointments and stakeholder engagement.
The Cocoa Management Board was recently inaugurated by Governor Aiyedatiwa as part of efforts to reposition the state’s cocoa sector, improve production and strengthen regulation across the value chain. The board is expected to drive policies aimed at boosting Ondo State’s position as one of Nigeria’s leading cocoa-producing states.
Despite the government’s objectives for the board, the decision by one of its appointees to publicly decline the appointment has generated political reactions, with critics calling for greater transparency and wider consultation in future appointments.
The Ondo State Government has yet to issue an official response to the rejection as stakeholders continue to monitor developments surrounding the cocoa board.
