Umahi Denies Cover-Up Over Physiotherapist’s Death, Orders Legal Action
ABAKALIKI, Nigeria – Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has dismissed allegations that there was any attempt to conceal the circumstances surrounding the death of a physiotherapist linked to his residence, insisting that due process was followed from the moment the incident occurred.
In a statement issued by his media office, Umahi described reports suggesting secrecy over the death of Miss Mary Habila as false and misleading. He directed his legal team to initiate legal proceedings against individuals and platforms responsible for circulating what he described as defamatory and unverified claims.
The minister expressed sympathy to the deceased’s family, stating that he received news of her death with deep sadness and immediately ensured that the appropriate authorities were notified. According to him, medical professionals, including the Chief Medical Director of the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS), were contacted promptly, while the Nigeria Police was informed in line with established legal procedures.
Umahi maintained that he had consistently advocated for an autopsy to scientifically establish the actual cause of death, stressing that only a medical examination could provide a credible and objective account of what transpired. He said his earlier recommendation for an autopsy was initially declined by the family but has now been renewed in the interest of transparency and justice.
The Minister urged members of the public to avoid speculation and allow law enforcement agencies and medical experts to carry out their responsibilities without interference. He emphasized that misinformation surrounding sensitive matters could undermine ongoing investigations and cause unnecessary distress to the bereaved family.
Reaffirming his commitment to accountability, Umahi said he would pursue legal action against those spreading what he described as malicious and unfounded allegations, while reiterating that the truth surrounding the incident should be determined through lawful and scientific processes rather than public speculation.
