Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has praised the Nigerian judiciary for its pivotal role in ensuring justice and protecting the rights of individuals, emphasizing that the rule of law was instrumental in his survival during a political crisis in 2023. Aiyedatiwa made the remarks during the Body of Benchers’ inaugural Annual Lecture and the public presentation of the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee’s report in Abuja on Wednesday.
Reflecting on the events of 2023, Aiyedatiwa recounted how, despite efforts to impeach him as acting governor, both divine intervention and the rule of law helped him navigate through the crisis. He recalled that during this period, when late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu was abroad for medical treatment, the Ondo State House of Assembly brought allegations of gross misconduct against him, triggering impeachment proceedings. The Assembly had requested the state’s Chief Judge to form a seven-man panel for investigation, in line with the Nigerian Constitution.
However, the Chief Judge ruled that no proceedings could continue until a court order issued by an Abuja court on September 26, 2023, was vacated or set aside. As a result, on October 16, 2023, the Assembly suspended the impeachment proceedings until the court order was resolved.
Aiyedatiwa went on to assume office as governor in December 2023, following Akeredolu’s death, and he emphasized the crucial role of the judiciary and the rule of law in ensuring stability and justice.
“After God, the rule of law was instrumental in my survival. It has further strengthened my belief in its importance,” Aiyedatiwa stated. “In the face of the political and thick plot to impeach me as deputy governor in 2023, the rule of law was crucial to my rescue.”
He also called on the Nigerian judiciary to adapt to the evolving needs of society by embracing technological advancements, including artificial intelligence, to enhance justice delivery. Aiyedatiwa stressed that the judiciary must continue to evolve in line with global trends, especially in digital governance and legal practice, to remain relevant and effective.
“As we embrace rapid technological advancement, particularly in artificial intelligence and global commerce, your role as custodians of justice must evolve to meet the demands of the modern era,” he said. “The Body of Benchers must ensure that the legal profession remains dynamic, relevant, and resilient in the face of global shifts.”
Aiyedatiwa’s comments underscore the importance of an impartial and effective judiciary in safeguarding democracy and justice in Nigeria.
