Senate Demands Accountability as SEDC Faces Questions Over ₦16.6 Billion Spending
The Senate has intensified oversight of the South East Development Commission (SEDC), demanding detailed explanations regarding the expenditure of ₦16.6 billion as lawmakers scrutinized the agency’s budget implementation and financial management.
During a budget defence session, members of the Senate committee expressed concerns over the scale of expenditure and sought clarification from the Managing Director of the Commission on how the funds were utilized. The lawmakers emphasized the need for transparency, accountability, and strict adherence to financial regulations in the management of public resources.
The committee questioned several aspects of the commission’s spending profile, requesting comprehensive documentation and evidence of projects executed with the funds. Senators stressed that every naira allocated to development agencies must translate into measurable benefits for citizens, particularly in critical areas such as infrastructure, economic development, youth empowerment, and regional integration.
Responding to the concerns, the Managing Director of the SEDC defended the commission’s financial activities, explaining that expenditures were tied to operational requirements, project implementation, and efforts aimed at accelerating development across the South-East region.
The Senate, however, maintained that public institutions must be fully accountable for budgetary allocations and urged the commission to provide additional details where necessary. Lawmakers reiterated their commitment to ensuring prudent management of government funds and effective delivery of development projects.
The scrutiny comes as the National Assembly continues its broader oversight of government agencies, departments, and commissions to promote fiscal responsibility and strengthen public confidence in governance.
Stakeholders believe the engagement between the Senate and the SEDC highlights the growing emphasis on transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s public sector, especially as development agencies play increasingly important roles in regional growth and infrastructure expansion.
The Senate assured Nigerians that oversight efforts would continue to ensure that public funds are utilized efficiently and in line with the objectives for which they were appropriated.
