Kano Deploys DSS, EFCC, ICPC to Prevent Fertilizer Diversion
The Kano State Government has intensified efforts to ensure transparency in the distribution of subsidised fertiliser by deploying security and anti-corruption agencies to monitor the process across the state.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf announced the move during the official flag-off of the distribution of 150 truckloads of subsidised fertiliser for the 2026 wet farming season. The initiative is aimed at boosting agricultural productivity, improving food security and ensuring that genuine farmers benefit from the government’s intervention.
According to the governor, about 90,000 bags of fertiliser will be sold to farmers at a 50 per cent subsidised rate and distributed across the state’s 44 local government areas and 484 wards. He stressed that the government would not tolerate the diversion of farm inputs or the activities of fake beneficiaries.
To strengthen accountability, the governor directed the Department of State Services (DSS), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to closely monitor the distribution process and ensure the fertiliser reaches genuine farmers.
Governor Yusuf also inaugurated state and local government monitoring committees to supervise the exercise, insisting that anyone caught diverting the fertiliser would face the full weight of the law.
He noted that his administration has consistently invested in agricultural support programmes over the past three years through the provision of subsidised fertilisers, improved seeds and other farm inputs. According to him, the interventions have contributed to increased crop yields, lower food prices, job creation and enhanced food security across Kano State.
Representatives of the EFCC and ICPC pledged to work with other security agencies to monitor the exercise, warning that offenders would be arrested and prosecuted.
Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr. Mahmoud Abubakar, said the state government remains committed to expanding agricultural support. He disclosed that preparations are underway to launch additional mechanised farming equipment to further improve food production and strengthen food security in the state.
