NDC Challenges Court Verdict, Files Appeal to Protect Political Party Registration
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has filed a notice of appeal and a motion for a stay of execution following a Federal High Court judgment in Lokoja, Kogi State, which nullified its registration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Confirming the development, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, said the NDC had taken immediate legal steps to challenge the ruling and protect its status as a political party.
According to him, the appeal demonstrates the party’s determination to contest the judgment through the appropriate legal process while maintaining confidence that justice will prevail. He maintained that the court’s decision does not bring an end to the matter and insisted the party remains legally recognised pending the determination of the appeal.
The legal dispute stems from a Federal High Court ruling that reversed an earlier judgment compelling the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the NDC as a political party. The decision has generated significant political interest as preparations for the 2027 general elections continue.
The party further assured its members, supporters and candidates that it would continue pursuing all lawful legal remedies to overturn the judgment, expressing optimism that the Court of Appeal would restore its position.
NDC leaders also reaffirmed that the party remains committed to participating fully in Nigeria’s democratic process and urged members across the country to remain calm while awaiting the outcome of the appeal.
