NUJ Sokoto Loses Member To COVID-19
The demise of the Guardian Newspaper correspondent in Sokoto State, Mr Eric Meya, has been reported, after a brief illness suspected to be COVID-19.
In a statement released by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sokoto State Council, stated that Meya passed on at the Usmanu Dan Fodio Hospital on Monday, 4th May, 2020.
The statement read in parts; “The Nigeria Union of journalists (NUJ) Sokoto State Council has regretted to announce the death of one of its member and Correspondent of the Guardian Newspaper in the state, Mr. Eric Meya”
“Secretary of the Secretary, Abubakar Awwal confirmed his death today. Meya passed on today at the Usman Dan Fodio University Teaching Hospal after a brief illness” the statement reads.
Meanwhile, the death has been described as a monumental loss to the entire practising journalists in the state, according to the Chairman of the council, Isa Abubakar Shuni, while mourning the demise.
“We lost a committed, hardworking and very jovial member who is not afraid of calling a spade, a spade no matter whose ox is gored. May his soul rest on,” he said.
Although as at the time of his demise, the COVID-19 test conducted on the deceased had not returned. However, when the result came in today, it turned out the late Meya had died of COVID-19
His burial arrangement will be announced later by his family.
