Influential Personalities from Ogbomoso in 2020 (Part 1)
Ogbomoso, the second largest city in Oyo State, has churned out many professionals and public figures with indelible marks in different walks of life.
Today, we have decided to beam our searchlight on the influential personalities of the town, who have not only been garlanded with honors and recognitions globally, but have also committed their wherewithals to the sustainable development of human and material resources of their community.
Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala:
A former governor of Oyo state. AlaoAkala still enjoys enormous popularity and goodwill within and outside the ancient city of Ogbomoso despite leaving office almost a decade ago.
Abdulfatai Omotayo Buhari:
He is the senator representing Oyo North senatorial district in the Nigerian Senate. He was appointed Chairman House committee on ICT and CyberCrime in 2015.
Sunday Akin Dare:
A former Executive Commissioner, Stakeholder Management, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). Sunday Dare is currently the Minister of Youth and Sports.
Oladayo Popoola:
A former Military Governor of Oyo and Ogun State. He hails from Ogbomoso.
Lere Paimo:
The legendary thespian, Eda Onile-ola is one of the leading captains of the Nigeria’s movie industry. Eda has been mesmerising the theatre scene with his compelling indigenous art since the early 1960s. He was bestowed with a National award of Member of the Federal Republic (MFR) by former President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2005.
Akin Onigbinde (SAN):
A former speaker of Oyo State House of Assembly, Akin Onigbinde is a seasoned legal luminary who was called to bar in 1986. Onigbinde was a frontline gubernatorial candidate on the platform of Alliance for Democracy, AD in the 2019 guber polls in Oyo state.
Tunde Aremu Irorun Agbe:
Founder Irorun Agbe Farm Booster Enterprise. Mr Aremu is a high-flying farmer and shrewd businessman.
Sayo Alagbe:
A veteran, poet, writer and journalist with over three decades of experience in media relations.
Over the years, Alagbe has been able to set the Yoruba culture and heritage on the path of global limelight and recognition through his extensive works in writing and research. His recent work is ‘Timo-Toye, a collection of 32 Yoruba poems and Six Hundred Yoruba Proverbs: An All-Embracing Potpie.’
Razaq Olatunde ROM Kalilu:
Professor ROM Kalilu is an internationally acclaimed doyen of Art History whose research works enjoy wide readership across the globe. Owing to his expertise, administrative acumen and intellectual fecundity he was appointed Deputy Vice Chancellor of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso between 2006 and 2008.
Akinwale Akinwole Wolekanle:
The Ogbomoso-born Chieftain of the APC is well known for his perpetual charitable deeds that spread across all strata of the society. He is also in the vanguard of promoting the rich cultural heritage of his hometown. He is the convener of the annual Ogbomoso Ajilete carnival and founder of Ogbomoso United Football Club.
Hamzat Ayoade Adeseun:
A former Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Adeseun’s tenure at the Red Chamber greeted his constituency with humongous development. Due to his commitment to Rural and Urban electrification, he was colloquially named ‘Ayo Solar.’
Olusegun Adeyemi Adekunle:
He is a son of the late Civil War commander, Benjamin Maja Adekunle. He is currently the Permanent Secretary, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. Olusegun Adekunle is an unassuming gentleman with total preference for privacy.
Mulikat Akande Adeola:
Obirin-rere as she is fondly called rose through the political ranks to become the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives between 2011 and 2015. She is a close ally of Nigeria’s former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan.
Yomi Akintola:
His father was a seasoned legal practitioner and Premier of Western Region. Like his late father, Yomi is passionate about the developement of Yoruba race. He has served as Minister of Internal Affairs and Nigeria’s Ambassador to Hungary.
Brimmo Yusuf:
Brimmo is a retired Brigadier General who made foray into politics in 1999 when he was elected Senator representing Oyo North constituency at the start of the Nigerian Fourth Republic, running on the platform of Alliance for Democracy (AD).
Samson Adegoke Maigida:
An outstanding philanthropist and founder of Maigida Foundation which was established to alleviate the sufferings of the needy, especially in the areas of health, education and youth empowerment.
