Nigerian Navy Arrests Pipeline Vandalism Kingpin, Recovers Weapons in Bayelsa Operation
The Nigerian Navy has intensified its crackdown on crude oil theft with the arrest of suspected pipeline vandals during a coordinated operation in Bayelsa State.
Naval operatives from the Forward Operating Base (FOB) FORMOSO carried out an intelligence-led raid on April 25 in Egbama-Angalabiri, located in Ekeremor Local Government Area. The operation led to the arrest of a prime suspect identified as Godwin, popularly known as “Idiot,” who is believed to be the leader of a pipeline vandalism syndicate operating around the Clough Creek axis.
The suspect was reportedly apprehended at a night market where he was allegedly collecting illegal levies from traders. Preliminary findings linked him to multiple attacks on critical oil and gas infrastructure within the Niger Delta region.
During a follow-up operation at the suspect’s residence, naval personnel encountered resistance from armed members of the syndicate. However, the attackers were successfully repelled through a coordinated tactical response.
Security operatives recovered two handheld radios and other equipment believed to have been used in coordinating illegal activities. Further intelligence efforts led to the arrest of an accomplice identified as Happiness, alongside the recovery of a pump-action gun.
Both suspects have since been handed over to the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps for further investigation and prosecution.
The Nigerian Navy reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the nation’s oil and gas infrastructure, vowing to sustain operations against economic sabotage and criminal networks in the Niger Delta.
