Canada Tightens Visa Rules, Announces Six Requirements for Nigerian Applicants
The Canadian government has introduced updated visa guidelines, outlining six key conditions that Nigerians and other foreign nationals must satisfy before they can be considered for temporary resident visas.
The revised requirements are part of Canada’s efforts to strengthen the integrity of its immigration system, ensure genuine travel intentions and improve border security. Immigration authorities said applicants will undergo more rigorous assessments to verify their eligibility before visas are approved.
According to the updated guidelines, applicants must first demonstrate that they will leave Canada at the end of their authorised stay. Visa officers will evaluate factors such as family ties, employment status, financial commitments and previous travel history to determine whether an applicant is likely to comply with immigration laws.
Applicants are also required to prove they have sufficient financial resources to cover transportation, accommodation and living expenses throughout their stay in Canada. Authorities said providing accurate financial documentation remains one of the most important aspects of the visa application process.
In addition, prospective visitors must present a valid travel document, maintain good health where applicable, and have no criminal record or security concerns that could make them inadmissible to Canada. Immigration officers may also request medical examinations or police clearance certificates depending on the applicant’s circumstances.
Another key requirement is that applicants must convince immigration officials that the purpose of their visit is genuine, whether for tourism, business, study or family visits. Supporting documents such as invitation letters, travel itineraries, admission letters or business correspondence may be requested during the application process.
Canadian authorities further warned that applicants must provide truthful and complete information in their applications, noting that submitting false documents or misleading information could result in visa refusal, application bans or other immigration penalties.
The updated visa conditions are expected to affect thousands of Nigerians seeking to travel to Canada each year for education, employment, tourism and family-related purposes. Immigration experts have advised intending travellers to carefully review the new requirements and ensure all supporting documents are complete before submitting their applications.
