Federal Government Launches Digital Device Loan Scheme for Smartphones, Laptops
The Federal Government has opened applications for a new consumer credit programme designed to help Nigerians acquire smartphones, laptops, tablets and other digital devices through flexible repayment plans. The initiative, known as the Credit for Laptops, Internet, Connectivity and Knowledge Digital Devices (C.L.I.C.K.D.) Programme, is being implemented by the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP) in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.
The programme was unveiled in Abuja by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, alongside CREDICORP Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Uzoma Nwagba. According to the Federal Government, the initiative is aimed at expanding digital inclusion by making essential technology devices more affordable for students, entrepreneurs, freelancers, remote workers and other Nigerians who rely on digital tools for education, business and innovation.
Under the scheme, successful applicants will be able to obtain eligible devices on credit and repay the cost in instalments rather than making a full upfront payment. The government said the first phase will prioritise locally assembled laptops as part of efforts to boost local manufacturing, create jobs and strengthen Nigeria’s digital economy.
To apply, interested Nigerians are required to visit the official C.L.I.C.K.D. application portal, complete the online registration form and provide details including their state of residence, employment status, preferred digital device and the purpose for requesting it. Applicants will also indicate whether they belong to recognised digital talent programmes such as 3MTT, ALX Africa, HNG Internship, AltSchool Africa, Andela Learning Community, Learn2Earn or Genesys Tech Hub.
The pilot phase is expected to benefit 1,000 participants of the Federal Government’s Three Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme, with 77 beneficiaries already receiving devices in Abuja. CREDICORP said the initiative will be expanded in phases to accommodate more eligible Nigerians as implementation progresses. The corporation added that details of the repayment structure and other financing terms will be communicated to qualified applicants.
The Federal Government described the programme as part of its broader strategy to promote financial inclusion, strengthen digital literacy and equip more Nigerians with the technology needed to compete in the modern digital economy.
