Terrorists Kill Sokoto Resident After Using Mosque Loudspeaker to Warn Villagers
A resident of Sokoto State has been killed by suspected terrorists after reportedly using a mosque’s public address system to warn villagers of an impending attack, in what has been described as another tragic incident highlighting the growing security challenges in parts of northwestern Nigeria.
The victim was said to have raised the alarm through the mosque’s loudspeaker after receiving information that armed attackers were approaching the community. His warning enabled many residents to flee to safety before the assailants arrived. However, the gunmen later identified him as the individual who had alerted the village and allegedly killed him in retaliation.
According to local sources, the attackers stormed the community shortly after the warning was issued, forcing residents to abandon their homes and seek refuge in safer areas. Although many escaped because of the timely alert, the victim reportedly paid the ultimate price for his courageous act.
The latest attack has renewed concerns over the persistent insecurity affecting several communities in Sokoto State and other parts of Nigeria’s North-West, where armed groups have continued to launch deadly raids, kidnap residents and destroy property despite ongoing military operations.
Community leaders have called on the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to protect vulnerable rural communities by increasing security presence, improving intelligence gathering and responding swiftly to distress calls.
Security experts have also urged authorities to strengthen early warning systems and community policing initiatives, arguing that residents who provide intelligence should receive adequate protection rather than being left exposed to reprisals from criminal groups.
The killing has sparked fresh calls for more decisive action against terrorism and banditry as affected communities continue to demand lasting solutions to the insecurity threatening lives and livelihoods across the region.
