Nigeria Petrol Production Hits 48 Million Litres Daily as Local Refineries Boost Output
Nigeria has achieved a major milestone in its quest for energy self-sufficiency, with local petrol production rising to approximately 48 million litres per day, according to the Federal Government.
The development marks a significant improvement in domestic refining capacity and reflects ongoing efforts to reduce the country’s dependence on imported petroleum products. Government officials attributed the increase to the growing output from local refineries, particularly the expansion of operations at the Dangote Refinery and the gradual revival of other refining facilities across the country.
Industry data indicate that Nigeria’s daily petrol consumption currently averages between 55 and 57 million litres, meaning local production is now supplying a substantial portion of national demand. The increase has strengthened confidence in the government’s policy of prioritising domestic refining and reducing the pressure on foreign exchange used for fuel imports.
Officials noted that the Petroleum Industry Act permits fuel imports only when local production is unable to meet domestic demand. As refining output continues to improve, regulators have increasingly shifted focus toward supporting local producers and encouraging investment in the downstream petroleum sector.
The Federal Government said the growth in local petrol production is expected to enhance energy security, create jobs, stimulate industrial growth, and strengthen Nigeria’s position as a major refining hub in Africa.
Stakeholders in the oil and gas industry have welcomed the development, describing it as a positive step toward achieving long-term stability in the petroleum sector. They, however, stressed the need for sustained crude oil supply to local refineries and continued investment in infrastructure to maintain production growth.
Analysts believe that if current production levels are sustained and expanded, Nigeria could soon eliminate the need for large-scale petrol imports while positioning itself as a net exporter of refined petroleum products to neighbouring African countries.
