Ex‑APC Kano Governorship Candidate Gawuna Quits Party, Meets Kwankwaso as Political Realignment Deepens
Former Kano State deputy governor and 2023 governorship standard-bearer for the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, has officially resigned from the party, signalling a notable shift in the state’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a resignation letter dated March 29 and addressed to the APC chairman in Gawuna Ward, Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, Gawuna described his departure as “voluntary and personal.” He thanked party members for their support but confirmed his decision to leave the ruling party with immediate effect.
Following his resignation, Gawuna visited former Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a key political leader and chieftain of the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC). The engagement has stoked speculation that Gawuna may be aligning with Kwankwaso’s political movement or exploring future collaboration under the ADC platform.
Political analysts say Gawuna’s exit from the APC reflects deeper realignments in Kano politics, where key figures are reassessing their affiliations amid shifting alliances and strategic positioning for upcoming elections. This move could influence the competitive dynamics between the ruling party and opposition blocs in northern Nigeria.
Observers also highlight that Gawuna’s decision may be driven by internal party disputes and a desire to remain politically relevant, particularly as influential actors like Kwankwaso expand their reach across the state.
As Kano’s political realignment gains momentum, attention will centre on Gawuna’s next steps and whether his new direction signals broader disaffection within the APC’s ranks ahead of the next electoral cycle.
