Court Sentences Four to Prison for Illegal Forex Transactions and Naira Trading
A Nigerian court has convicted and sentenced four individuals for engaging in illegal foreign exchange transactions and the unauthorised trading of the naira, reinforcing the Federal Government’s efforts to sanitise the country’s foreign exchange market.
The defendants were found guilty of operating unauthorised foreign exchange businesses and engaging in activities that violated Nigeria’s financial regulations governing the buying and selling of foreign currencies. The prosecution established that the convicts carried out forex transactions outside the approved regulatory framework, contrary to existing laws.
The court held that the offences undermined the stability of the foreign exchange market and contributed to the illegal trading of the naira. It subsequently imposed prison sentences on the four convicts, stressing the need to deter others from engaging in similar financial crimes.
The convictions form part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement and regulatory agencies to curb illegal foreign exchange trading, protect the integrity of the naira, and strengthen confidence in Nigeria’s financial system. Authorities have repeatedly warned that individuals and businesses involved in unauthorised forex transactions or street trading of foreign currencies risk prosecution.
The government has continued to intensify enforcement against illegal currency trading as part of broader economic reforms aimed at promoting transparency, stabilising the foreign exchange market, and safeguarding the value of the naira.
