Falana Condemns EFCC’s Alleged Freezing of Osun State Accounts, Demands Adherence to Rule of Law
Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has criticised the alleged freezing of bank accounts linked to the Osun State Government by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), insisting that such action must strictly comply with constitutional and legal provisions.
Falana argued that anti-corruption agencies are required to operate within the confines of the law and due process, stressing that any restriction placed on government accounts must be backed by a valid court order and carried out in accordance with established legal procedures. He maintained that the fight against corruption should never undermine the rule of law or constitutional governance.
The senior lawyer noted that while the EFCC has statutory powers to investigate allegations of financial crimes, those powers must be exercised responsibly and in line with the Constitution. He warned that actions perceived as arbitrary could erode public confidence in law enforcement institutions and generate unnecessary political controversy.
Falana called on all parties involved to allow the legal process to take its course, urging the courts to determine the legality of any action taken regarding the state’s finances. He also emphasised the importance of protecting public funds while ensuring that governance and essential public services are not disrupted.
The controversy surrounding the alleged freezing of Osun State Government accounts has continued to generate political and legal debate, with stakeholders awaiting the court’s determination on the matter.
