Court Sentences Two Chinese Nationals to Five Years in Prison for Illegal Mining
A Nigerian court has sentenced two Chinese nationals to five years’ imprisonment each for engaging in illegal mining and the unlawful export of the country’s solid minerals, in a judgment authorities say reinforces the government’s commitment to tackling illegal exploitation of natural resources.
The convicts were found guilty of operating without the required licences and illegally exporting valuable solid minerals in violation of Nigeria’s mining and environmental regulations. The court also imposed financial penalties and ordered the forfeiture of exhibits linked to the offences as part of efforts to deter similar crimes.
The prosecution maintained that the illegal mining activities deprived the Federal Government of legitimate revenue, undermined regulatory oversight and contributed to environmental degradation in affected communities. Authorities stressed that the convictions should serve as a strong warning to individuals and companies involved in illegal mining operations across the country.
The Federal Government has intensified efforts to sanitise the mining sector through stricter enforcement, improved surveillance and stronger collaboration among security agencies and regulatory institutions. The campaign is aimed at curbing illegal mineral exploitation, boosting government revenue and promoting responsible investment in Nigeria’s solid minerals industry.
Officials reiterated that both foreign and local operators must comply with the provisions of the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act and obtain the necessary licences before engaging in exploration, mining or the export of mineral resources.
