PDP Faction Nominates Goodluck Jonathan for 2027 Presidency, Submits Candidate List to INEC
A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has formally submitted the name of former President Goodluck Jonathan to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, further highlighting the deepening leadership crisis within the opposition party.
The faction, which insists it is the legitimate leadership of the PDP, said it manually delivered Jonathan’s nomination documents to INEC after alleging it was denied access to the commission’s electronic candidate nomination portal. The submission also included the names of the faction’s governorship, National Assembly and State House of Assembly candidates across the country.
According to the group’s leaders, the manual submission was carried out in compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act, stressing that the faction remains committed to participating fully in the 2027 electoral process. They also accused INEC of failing to maintain neutrality in the handling of the party’s internal leadership dispute.
The faction further disclosed that it has challenged recent court rulings relating to the PDP leadership tussle and expressed confidence that the appellate courts would uphold its position. It maintained that the legal battle would ultimately determine which faction has the authority to present candidates for the forthcoming general election.
Political observers believe the latest development could intensify the PDP’s internal crisis as rival factions continue to lay claim to the party’s leadership and nomination process. The dispute is expected to remain a major issue until the courts deliver final judgments and INEC publishes its definitive list of candidates for the 2027 elections.
