Kano Rainstorm Kills Five, Destroys Property Worth Millions in Bichi
At least five people have been confirmed dead after a devastating rainstorm swept through Bichi Local Government Area of Kano State, destroying homes and properties worth millions of naira while leaving many residents displaced.
The Kano State Emergency Management Agency (KASEMA) confirmed the casualty figure, clarifying earlier reports that suggested a higher death toll. The agency’s Executive Secretary, Alhaji Isyaku Kubarachi, said officials conducted an on-the-ground assessment before verifying that five people lost their lives during the disaster. He noted that the storm, which lasted several hours, also caused widespread destruction of houses and valuable property across the affected communities.
According to KASEMA, a comprehensive damage assessment has been completed and submitted to the Kano State Government to facilitate prompt relief and support for affected families. The agency assured residents that emergency assistance and relief materials would be distributed as soon as they become available.
Meanwhile, the Kano State House of Assembly has called on the state government to urgently provide relief materials and humanitarian assistance to victims of the disaster. The lawmakers adopted a motion urging immediate intervention to cushion the hardship faced by families whose homes and livelihoods were affected by the rainstorm.
The incident has renewed concerns over the impact of extreme weather and seasonal flooding across Nigeria, with stakeholders urging authorities to strengthen disaster preparedness, improve drainage infrastructure and intensify public awareness campaigns to minimise the effects of future natural disasters.
