Xenophobic Attacks: Oshiomhole Demands Revocation of MTN, DStv Licences in Nigeria
Senator Adams Oshiomhole has called on the Federal Government to revoke the operating licences of South African companies in Nigeria, including MTN Group and MultiChoice Group, following renewed xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa.
The Edo North lawmaker made the demand during a Senate plenary session, urging Nigeria to adopt a firm and reciprocal response to the persistent violence targeting its citizens abroad.
Oshiomhole argued that continued diplomatic restraint is no longer sufficient, stressing that Nigeria must protect its citizens through decisive economic measures. He described the situation as an economic struggle and emphasized that retaliation could serve as a deterrent against further attacks.
According to him, multinational companies like MTN generate substantial revenue from Nigeria while Nigerians face hostility in South Africa. He suggested that the Federal Government should consider stronger regulatory actions, including the possibility of revoking operational licences.
The senator also raised concerns about the role of DStv in Nigeria’s economy, calling for measures that would encourage greater local participation in sectors dominated by foreign firms.
“If you hit me, I hit you,” Oshiomhole stated during the plenary, underscoring the need for a tougher diplomatic stance.
His remarks come amid growing outrage over recent xenophobic violence in South Africa, where Nigerians have reportedly been targeted. Lawmakers have continued to call for urgent government intervention to ensure the safety of citizens and safeguard national interests.
Despite the strong position expressed, the Senate has yet to formally adopt the proposal, with authorities expected to explore diplomatic and policy options in addressing the situation.
