2027: Fresh Crisis Rocks Obi-Kwankwaso Camp as OK Movement DG Peter Ameh Resigns

By The Nigeria Standard Magazine

A fresh leadership challenge has emerged within the political movement backing Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 presidential election following the resignation of the Director-General of the Obi-Kwankwaso (OK) Movement, High Chief Peter Ameh.

Ameh announced his resignation with immediate effect in Abuja on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at a sensitive period when the movement is expected to strengthen its grassroots structures and prepare for the commencement of nationwide electioneering.

His departure comes against the backdrop of an earlier factional leadership dispute within the OK Movement, with some members previously challenging Ameh’s leadership. The combination of those disagreements and his resignation has created a fresh organisational test for the political structure supporting the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket.

However, Ameh insisted that his decision should not be interpreted as abandoning Obi, Kwankwaso or their 2027 political project. He said he resigned primarily to concentrate on his own campaign for the Kogi East Senatorial District on the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Ameh Resigns to Pursue Kogi East Senate Seat

Explaining his decision, Ameh said stepping aside would enable him to dedicate sufficient attention to his senatorial campaign.

The former Director-General made clear that although he was relinquishing the leadership of the movement, his political loyalty remained with the NDC presidential project.

He described Obi as his leader and said he would accept whoever is chosen to succeed him as Director-General.

Ameh also praised Obi’s leadership, integrity and credibility, saying those qualities contributed to the establishment and vision of the OK Movement.

His position is significant because it distinguishes his resignation from a political defection or withdrawal of support. There is currently no evidence in his resignation letter that he has abandoned the Obi-Kwankwaso alliance.

Resignation Comes After Earlier Leadership Dispute

What makes Ameh’s departure politically significant, however, is its timing.

The OK Movement had already experienced internal disagreements, with a factional leadership tussle emerging and some members reportedly denouncing Ameh’s leadership.

Ameh himself had only been appointed National Director-General in July as part of efforts to strengthen the organisation and expand its mobilisation structures ahead of the 2027 elections.

His resignation barely a month later means the organisation must again address the question of leadership at a time when political parties and presidential candidates are preparing for an increasingly competitive campaign.

This does not necessarily mean that the Obi-Kwankwaso alliance itself is collapsing. But it does present an early organisational and political management test for the coalition.

Obi-Kwankwaso Alliance Faces Test of Unity

The OK Movement emerged as a political platform designed to bring together supporters of Obi and Kwankwaso following their decision to pursue a joint presidential ticket under the NDC.

The project seeks to combine two previously distinct political support bases — the Obidient Movement associated with Obi and the Kwankwasiyya structure associated with Kwankwaso — into a broader nationwide political force.

On paper, the combination presents considerable political possibilities.

Obi entered the 2023 presidential election with strong support among young voters and in parts of Southern Nigeria, while Kwankwaso demonstrated significant electoral strength in Kano and maintains an established political structure in sections of the North.

Bringing those constituencies together is one thing; successfully integrating their political structures, ambitions and leadership arrangements into a unified national campaign is another.

The latest development therefore illustrates one of the fundamental challenges confronting political coalitions: building a movement around prominent personalities is often easier than creating a unified command structure acceptable to all competing interests.

Leadership Vacuum Must Be Addressed Quickly

For the OK Movement, the immediate challenge will be appointing a successor capable of commanding confidence across the different tendencies within the organisation.

A prolonged leadership struggle could become a distraction just as the Obi-Kwankwaso campaign needs to concentrate on voter mobilisation, policy messaging and the establishment of functional structures across the federation.

Ameh has attempted to ease that transition by publicly declaring that he will support whoever Obi appoints to replace him.

But the effectiveness of the transition will depend on whether other competing groups within the movement accept the new leadership arrangement.

Reports had earlier indicated that Obi was unhappy with the internal disagreements within the movement, while Kwankwaso’s spokesman, Ladipo Johnson, described the crisis as a distraction that should not be allowed to undermine the broader political project.

Opposition Unity Under Scrutiny Ahead of 2027

The development is also significant within the wider battle for the 2027 presidency.

Opposition politicians have repeatedly argued that cooperation will be essential if they are to mount a formidable challenge against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress.

But opposition alliances in Nigeria have historically faced challenges ranging from disagreements over leadership and candidate selection to competing personal ambitions and disputes over control of campaign structures.

The Obi-Kwankwaso partnership will consequently be judged not only by the popularity of its two leading figures but also by its ability to manage internal disagreements without allowing them to destabilise the larger project.

Every internal dispute provides political opponents with an opportunity to question whether the alliance possesses the cohesion necessary to run a national campaign — and potentially a government.

Resignation Could Also Provide Opportunity for Reorganisation

Ameh’s departure, however, does not have to become a major setback.

Because he is contesting the Kogi East senatorial election himself, relinquishing the demanding position of national Director-General could allow the OK Movement to appoint a full-time campaign administrator without competing electoral responsibilities.

If the transition is handled quickly and transparently, the organisation could use the development to resolve its existing leadership disagreements and restructure ahead of the presidential campaign.

Ameb’s continued declaration of loyalty also reduces the immediate political damage that might have followed had he resigned in protest or defected to another party.

The real test, therefore, will be what happens next.

Can Obi and Kwankwaso Hold Their Coalition Together?

As Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 elections, the Obi-Kwankwaso political partnership will inevitably come under greater pressure.

Campaign positions must be distributed, state coordinators appointed, resources allocated and different political interests accommodated.

Such decisions often determine whether coalitions become stronger or descend into factional struggles.

For Obi and Kwankwaso, the resignation of Ameh presents an opportunity to demonstrate that their political alliance can absorb internal disagreements and continue functioning effectively.

Failure to quickly resolve the leadership question, however, could deepen perceptions of instability within the movement.

For now, Ameh insists he remains part of the political project and is merely shifting attention to his Kogi East senatorial campaign.

That distinction is important.

Therefore, describing the resignation itself as evidence of a collapse in the Obi-Kwankwaso alliance would go beyond the available facts. What is clear is that an existing leadership dispute has now been complicated by the departure of the movement’s Director-General at a critical stage of preparations for 2027.

Whether the development becomes a temporary organisational setback or develops into a deeper political crisis will depend largely on how quickly Obi, Kwankwaso and the leadership of the OK Movement manage the succession process.

With the 2027 political battle gathering momentum, the opposition alliance can hardly afford a prolonged internal struggle while simultaneously attempting to convince Nigerians that it represents a credible alternative to the incumbent administration.
