2027 Presidency: Peter Obi Challenges Tinubu on Leadership, Vows to End Insecurity, Corruption

Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has declared that Nigeria urgently needs a president with competence, capacity, compassion and commitment to tackle the country’s growing economic and security challenges.
Obi maintained that effective leadership must go beyond political promises, insisting that Nigerians deserve a president who is accessible, accountable and prepared to take responsibility for addressing national emergencies.
Speaking during the inauguration of the NDC’s 118-member National Presidential Campaign Council in Abuja on Monday, Obi criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, accusing it of failing to demonstrate the leadership qualities required to address insecurity, poverty, unemployment and the rising cost of living.
The former Anambra State governor argued that Nigeria’s challenges demand urgent intervention rather than political excuses, stressing that the next president must possess the energy, political will and administrative competence necessary to restore public confidence in government.
Obi expressed concern over persistent insecurity across the country, maintaining that a responsible president should remain actively involved in protecting citizens, particularly communities affected by kidnapping, banditry and violent attacks.
According to him, Nigerians deserve a leader who responds promptly whenever lives and property are threatened rather than one who appears disconnected from the suffering of ordinary citizens.
The opposition presidential candidate also questioned the management of public resources under the current administration, promising that an NDC government would prioritise transparency, fiscal discipline and accountability in the utilisation of national revenue.
He pledged to confront corruption and ensure that government resources are channelled towards improving education, healthcare, security, infrastructure and economic opportunities for Nigerians.
Obi further maintained that Nigeria’s leadership crisis cannot be resolved through political rhetoric alone, emphasising the importance of measurable achievements, responsible governance and policies capable of improving citizens’ living standards.
The former governor, who is contesting alongside former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, expressed confidence that their political experience and proposed governance reforms would offer Nigerians an alternative in the forthcoming presidential election.
The inauguration of the party’s campaign council formed part of preparations for the 2027 elections, alongside the unveiling of its national secretariat in Jabi, Abuja, and the presentation of certificates of return to candidates contesting on the party’s platform.
Obi also called for a transparent, peaceful and credible electoral process, warning against practices capable of undermining the democratic rights of Nigerians to freely choose their leaders.
His latest criticism comes as President Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) continue to defend the administration’s economic reform agenda while seeking renewed electoral support ahead of the 2027 general elections.
As political activities gather momentum, Obi’s emphasis on competence, compassion and accountability is expected to feature prominently in the opposition’s campaign, placing leadership performance, national security and economic recovery at the centre of the presidential contest.
The emerging political debate also raises a fundamental question for Nigerian voters: whether the next presidential election should be determined by party loyalty and political structures or by the ability of candidates to demonstrate credible solutions to the country’s pressing challenges.
For Obi, the 2027 presidential election represents an opportunity for Nigerians to demand a new standard of governance in which public office is measured by service delivery, responsible leadership and tangible improvements in citizens’ welfare.
