Afenifere Leader Pa Reuben Fasoranti Dies at 100, Leaves Lasting Legacy
Yoruba Nation Mourns Elder Statesman as Nigeria Loses
Prominent Advocate of Democracy, Restructuring and Good Governance
Nigeria’s political landscape has lost one of its most respected elder statesmen following the death of Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, the national leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, who passed away at the age of 100. His death on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, marks the end of a remarkable era in Yoruba political history, particularly among the surviving disciples of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, whose progressive philosophy shaped generations of political leadership in southwestern Nigeria.
The death of the respected Yoruba patriarch was officially announced by Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, who described Fasoranti as a symbol of wisdom, integrity, patriotism and selfless service. According to the governor, the late elder statesman devoted his century-long existence to advancing the interests of Ondo State, the Yoruba nation and Nigeria. His passing has created a significant vacuum within Afenifere, where his fatherly guidance and principled interventions remained influential in discussions concerning democracy, restructuring, national unity and good governance.
Born on May 11, 1926, in Akure, Ondo State, Fasoranti distinguished himself as an educationist, administrator, politician and committed advocate of progressive governance. He served as Commissioner for Finance in the administration of the late Governor Michael Adekunle Ajasin between 1979 and 1983 and subsequently emerged as a prominent voice in the struggle for democratic governance. His political philosophy was deeply rooted in the ideals of Awolowo, particularly free education, social justice, responsible leadership and equitable distribution of national resources.
Beyond his political achievements, the late Afenifere leader was widely respected for his unwavering commitment to Yoruba unity, constitutional democracy and the restructuring of Nigeria. He assumed the leadership of Afenifere in November 2008 following the death of Chief Abraham Adesanya and remained a major influence in national political discourse. Despite experiencing personal tragedy, including the killing of his daughter, Mrs Funke Olakunrin, in July 2019, Fasoranti continued to demonstrate remarkable resilience, advocating improved security, justice and protection of citizens across the country.
His eldest son, Dr Taiwo Fasoranti, who serves as Secretary to the Ondo State Government, confirmed that his father died peacefully in his sleep at approximately 4 p.m. The family described his passing as an opportunity to celebrate a fulfilled life rather than dwell entirely on grief. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also paid tribute to the departed elder statesman, acknowledging his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development and recalling the encouragement he received from Fasoranti during his presidential consultations in 2022.
As condolences continue to pour in from political leaders, traditional institutions, civil society organisations and admirers across Nigeria, the death of Pa Fasoranti raises fresh questions about the future leadership and ideological direction of Afenifere. His departure represents more than the loss of a respected Yoruba patriarch; it symbolises the gradual passing of a generation of political leaders who witnessed colonial rule, independence, military dictatorship and the restoration of democracy. His enduring legacy of courage, education, patriotism and principled leadership will remain an important reference point for generations seeking a more united, just and prosperous Nigeria.
