Insecurity: Gunmen Kill Islamic Cleric, Associate in Katsina as Police Launch Manhunt

By Akin Alade
The growing security concerns in Nigeria’s North-West have taken another disturbing turn following the killing of a prominent Islamic scholar, Sheikh Yahaya Ibrahim Masussuka, and his associate, Adamu Abubakar, by unidentified gunmen in Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The tragic incident occurred on Monday, October 26, 2026, at approximately 7:30 p.m., when two armed men reportedly arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire on the victims outside the cleric’s residence. The attackers subsequently escaped, leaving both men with fatal gunshot injuries.
The Katsina State Police Command confirmed the killings through its spokesperson, DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, who disclosed that officers from the Dutsin-Ma Division immediately responded to the incident. The victims were evacuated to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment but were pronounced dead on arrival.
The assassination has raised fresh concerns about the vulnerability of religious leaders and community peace advocates amid persistent insecurity in parts of Katsina State. Sheikh Masussuka was widely respected for his Islamic teachings, advocacy for peaceful coexistence and opposition to violent extremism.
Particularly disturbing is the revelation that the deceased cleric had reportedly been preparing for a peace and unity gathering scheduled for October 31, 2026. His killing, just days before the proposed event, has heightened public concern about the safety of individuals promoting dialogue and reconciliation in communities affected by violence.
Reacting to the incident, Katsina State Governor, Dikko Umaru Radda, expressed shock and sadness over the deaths, describing Sheikh Masussuka as a respected religious figure whose contributions to peaceful coexistence and interfaith understanding would be remembered. The governor called for a thorough investigation and urged residents to remain calm while cooperating with security agencies.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Katsina State, Ali Umaru Fage, has ordered the deployment of tactical and operational teams to Dutsin-Ma and surrounding communities to identify, track down and apprehend those responsible for the attack. The police authorities assured residents that efforts were underway to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Although the circumstances surrounding the killing remain under investigation, the identities of the attackers and their motives have yet to be established. No arrests had been publicly announced as of the latest police update, leaving critical questions unanswered about whether the cleric was specifically targeted.
The incident has once again brought attention to the broader security challenges confronting communities across Nigeria’s North-West, where armed attacks, kidnappings and other violent crimes have continued to threaten lives and livelihoods. Security observers have repeatedly stressed the importance of intelligence gathering, community cooperation and proactive policing in preventing further attacks.
As family members, religious followers and residents mourn the deceased, attention has shifted to the ongoing police investigation and the need to strengthen protection for vulnerable communities. The killing of Sheikh Masussuka and his associate underscores the urgency of restoring public confidence in security institutions and ensuring that those responsible for violent crimes
are held accountable.
