Youth Group Defends IGP Egbetokun Over Alleged $2.5m Fraud Claims
A youth organisation has dismissed allegations linking the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to a purported $2.5 million fraud involving an individual identified as Henry Ikeji, describing the claims as unfounded and misleading.
In a statement issued on Friday, the group said attempts to associate the IGP with the alleged fraud were part of a deliberate campaign to damage his reputation and undermine the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force. The organisation stressed that there is no credible evidence connecting the IGP to the alleged financial impropriety.
The group explained that routine official interactions, public appearances, or photographs with members of the public should not be misinterpreted as proof of personal or financial relationships. It added that such narratives amount to speculation and misinformation.
Addressing claims of an internal crisis within the police hierarchy, the youth group stated that there has been no unusual activity, emergency meetings, or digital clean-up exercise within the force. According to the group, the Nigeria Police operates established communication and administrative structures and has not taken any extraordinary steps in response to the allegations.
The organisation also dismissed insinuations of unlawful surveillance and irregular retirements within the force, noting that all security and personnel decisions follow due process and existing legal frameworks.
The youth group urged members of the public to disregard the allegations, calling on stakeholders to rely on verified facts and responsible information while allowing law enforcement agencies to continue their duties without distraction.
