LONDON — Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has deleted all his Fulham-related posts from Instagram following jeers from a section of the club’s supporters during their Premier League defeat to Crystal Palace.
Iwobi was substituted in the 82nd minute of Fulham’s 3-2 loss to Palace, with some supporters responding with ironic cheers and jeers as the Nigerian midfielder left the pitch.
The reaction came despite Iwobi reportedly covering the second-highest distance of any Fulham player during the match.
The 30-year-old started all three of Fulham’s opening Premier League fixtures this season as the club struggled to find its footing.
Fulham have lost all three of their opening league games and currently sit 19th in the Premier League table, with only newly promoted Coventry City having a worse start on goal difference.
Iwobi’s decision to remove the Fulham-related content from his Instagram is not the first time he has taken such action.
The midfielder previously deleted his Fulham-related posts earlier in the year before restoring many of them in late May.
His latest action also brings back memories of February 2024, when Iwobi deactivated his social media accounts following intense criticism and abuse after Nigeria’s defeat in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final.
Iwobi joined Fulham from Everton in 2023 under manager Marco Silva and has since established himself as an important member of the squad.
His former Arsenal teammate Emile Smith Rowe has also wiped his Instagram profile clean of football-related content amid Fulham’s difficult start to the campaign.
Smith Rowe has made substitute appearances in two of Fulham’s opening three league matches and was an unused substitute in the other.
Fulham will now look to turn their fortunes around when they travel to Anfield to face unbeaten Liverpool in their next Premier League fixture.
The club will be hoping to end its poor start to the season, while Iwobi will be aiming to help Fulham secure their first points of the campaign.
