Wike’s Rainbow Coalition Sparks APC Loyalty Battle Ahead of 2027

A fresh political battle is brewing within the wider coalition supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid following growing resistance within the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the “Rainbow Coalition” being promoted by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

At the centre of the disagreement is a fundamental question: can political actors mobilise for Tinubu’s re-election while simultaneously supporting candidates running against the APC in governorship, National Assembly and state legislative elections?

The controversy has now spread to the South-East, where APC leaders have rejected Wike’s Rainbow Coalition and declared their support for the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) and candidates officially sponsored by the ruling party.

In a joint statement signed by APC National Vice Chairman for the South-East, Dr Ijeomah Arodiogbu, alongside party chairmen from Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states, the leaders insisted that the party must protect its political structures ahead of the 2027 general elections.

They backed the position of the Progressive Governors’ Forum that support for APC candidates should extend from the presidential election to governorship, National Assembly and state House of Assembly contests.

The position puts the South-East APC leadership at odds with the political strategy associated with Wike, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who has openly maintained his support for Tinubu’s re-election.

Wike has argued that his support for the President does not automatically translate into support for every APC candidate.

His Rainbow Coalition is designed as a cross-party political arrangement capable of bringing politicians from different platforms together in support of Tinubu while allowing them to retain their respective political affiliations and interests.

But that arrangement has become a source of concern among APC governors and some party leaders.

Their concern centres on the possibility of politicians campaigning for Tinubu at the presidential level while mobilising against APC candidates in other elections.

Such a development could create an unusual electoral situation in which the President benefits from cross-party support while candidates of his own party face opposition from members of the same political coalition supporting him.

South-East APC leaders made clear that they would not support any political arrangement they believe could undermine the ruling party’s candidates or structures.

They also criticised Wike over his recent exchanges with members of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, arguing that elected governors should not be subjected to attempts to determine their political future from outside the party.

The disagreement has consequently moved beyond personalities and exposed competing strategies over how Tinubu’s 2027 support base should be organised.

For Wike and supporters of the Rainbow Coalition, building a broad political network beyond traditional party boundaries could expand the President’s electoral support.

For APC governors and party leaders resisting the arrangement, however, presidential victory cannot be separated from protecting APC candidates contesting other positions.

The Progressive Governors’ Forum has maintained that its members will support Tinubu alongside candidates officially sponsored by the APC at every level.

Wike, on the other hand, maintains that the Rainbow Coalition is not an APC structure and that his support for Tinubu does not require abandoning the PDP or preventing other parties from presenting candidates.

With the 2027 general elections approaching, the disagreement could become an important test of how the ruling party manages outside political alliances without weakening its own candidates.

The South-East APC leadership has now drawn its line: support for Tinubu must go together with support for the APC political structure and its candidates.

Whether Wike’s Rainbow Coalition can coexist with that position without further confrontation remains one of the emerging political questions ahead of 2027.
