Benue Insecurity: Troops Arrest Four Suspects Over Bandit Supplies, Armed Robbery
By Akin Alade
The Nigerian military has intensified its crackdown on criminal networks operating in Benue State, arresting two suspected logistics suppliers allegedly connected to a notorious bandit leader and two suspected armed robbers in separate security operations.
The arrests were carried out by troops of the Joint Task Force (JTF), Operation Whirl Stroke, on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, in Katsina-Ala and Ukum Local Government Areas of the state.
The development represents another effort by security forces to disrupt the support networks allegedly sustaining armed banditry and other criminal activities in parts of Benue State.
According to a statement issued by the Acting Media Information Officer of Operation Whirl Stroke, Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu, troops of Sector 1 acted on intelligence concerning suspected suppliers operating within Abaji community in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area.
The military identified the arrested individuals as 24-year-old Tertser Terngu and 15-year-old Aondongu Tersoo, both reportedly from Tersoo Village.
Military authorities alleged that the suspects had been providing logistical assistance to a bandit kingpin operating across River Yooyo in Katsina-Ala, an area affected by recurring security challenges.
The statement did not disclose the identity of the alleged bandit leader or specify the nature and quantity of supplies reportedly provided by the suspects.
The two suspects were subsequently taken into custody for further investigation and processing by the appropriate security authorities.
In a related development, troops conducting a fighting patrol responded to intelligence about an armed robbery incident at Jootar Village along the Kyado-Wukari Road in Ukum Local Government Area.
The military disclosed that personnel mobilised to the location at approximately 2:16 p.m., where members of the Volunteer Guards had already apprehended two individuals suspected of involvement in the robbery.
Items reportedly recovered during the operation included a locally manufactured pistol, seven rounds of 7.62mm PKT ammunition and a pair of scissors.
The suspects and recovered exhibits are expected to form part of investigations aimed at establishing the circumstances surrounding the alleged criminal activities.
Reacting to the operations, the Force Commander of Operation Whirl Stroke and General Officer Commanding, 5 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Moses Gara, commended the troops for their vigilance and operational commitment.
Gara urged military personnel to sustain the momentum of security operations and continue relying on credible intelligence to identify criminal elements and prevent attacks across their areas of responsibility.
He also emphasised the importance of maintaining vigilance and strengthening intelligence gathering as part of ongoing efforts to improve security in affected communities.
The latest arrests draw attention to the role of suspected logistics networks in sustaining armed criminal groups, particularly where the movement of supplies and other resources may enable prolonged criminal operations.
Security experts have consistently identified the disruption of criminal support systems, improved intelligence sharing and effective coordination among security agencies as important components of counter-banditry operations.
Benue State has continued to experience security challenges involving armed attacks, kidnapping, communal tensions and other violent crimes, particularly in vulnerable rural communities.
Operation Whirl Stroke remains part of the military’s efforts to combat armed criminality and restore stability across its joint operational area.
The latest development also highlights the importance of cooperation between conventional security forces and community-based security volunteers in responding to threats.
Military authorities have not announced any prosecution arising from the arrests, while investigations are expected to determine the extent of the suspects’ alleged involvement in criminal activities.
The allegations against all four suspects remain subject to investigation, and none has been established as guilty by a court of law.
As security operations continue across Benue State, residents will be looking to the military and other security agencies for sustained action capable of protecting lives, securing communities and restoring confidence in vulnerable areas.
