Adetomiwa Adegoroye, a concerned son of Ijebu land and President of Ijebu Democracy Voice, has expressed deep concern over recent developments in the Awujale succession process, calling for an urgent and transparent investigation into the actions of the revered Afobajes.
According to Adegoroye, events unfolding at this critical junction give the disturbing impression that some Afobajes may be acting based on personal or selfish interests rather than the collective good of Ijebu land. He noted that after an alleged closed-door meeting, conflicting narratives emerged from the same quarters—statements capable of creating confusion, mistrust, and even chaos within the community.
He further raised concern over reports that more than ninety potential princes were presented to the government, only for the same Afobajes to later single out and publicly nail one individual as a preferred candidate—an assertion the government has reportedly denied. This development, he said, raises serious questions about motive and intent, including whether such actions are designed to undermine or weaken the chances of the so-called prince.
Adegoroye also frowned at the growing trend of sensitive matters—meant to remain confidential between the Afobajes and the government—being openly discussed on social media. He described this as highly inappropriate and indicative of vested interests in a particular candidate, an interest he stressed should never exist. The sacred duty of the Afobajes, he maintained, is to protect the heritage of the land, the royal families, and the cultural integrity of Ijebu people.
He therefore advised His Excellency, the Governor, not to hesitate in setting up an independent committee to investigate the conduct of the Afobajes without delay. This call, he said, becomes more necessary in view of unconfirmed reports alleging that some Afobajes may have received material and financial gifts from a candidate. While he stated clearly that he does not believe such allegations, Adegoroye emphasized the need for a transparent investigation to put the records straight and protect the dignity of the Ijebu dynasty.
“Ijebu culture remains one of the most enviable traditional institutions in Africa—richer in history, values, and prestige than many kingdoms,” Adegoroye noted. “For the sake of posterity, peace, unity, and love in Ijebu land and Ogun State at large, this matter must be addressed openly and responsibly.”
He concluded that in the overriding interest of justice, truth, and the preservation of Ijebu heritage, the actions of the Afobajes must be thoroughly investigated
