US Ends Routine Visa Processing in Abuja, Moves Applications to Lagos

Trump Administration Moves to Dismantle Voice of America and Other US-Funded Media

The United States government has announced that it will discontinue routine visa processing at its Embassy in Abuja from August 1, 2026, as part of a sweeping restructuring of its consular operations across Africa aimed at strengthening security, improving efficiency, and streamlining visa services.

The policy, unveiled by the U.S. Department of State, does not signal the closure of the U.S. Embassy in Abuja. Rather, routine immigrant and non-immigrant visa applications from Nigeria will now be processed primarily through the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos, which has been designated as one of the regional visa processing hubs.

According to the State Department, the reorganisation is designed to enhance the consistency of security screening and visa adjudication while reducing operational costs across the continent. Officials said the new structure would also improve service delivery by centralising routine visa operations at selected diplomatic missions.

The change affects Abuja and more than 20 other U.S. diplomatic missions across Africa, including embassies and consulates in Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Chad, Eritrea, Eswatini, Gabon, Guinea, Lesotho, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Republic of the Congo, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, The Gambia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Despite the adjustment, the U.S. Embassy in Abuja will remain fully operational and continue to provide a range of diplomatic and consular services, including assistance to American citizens, emergency services and other official functions.

The U.S. government also clarified that visas already issued remain valid until their expiration dates. Applicants with existing appointments at affected missions will receive direct communication on the next steps regarding their visa applications.

The latest move marks one of the most significant reforms to U.S. visa operations in Africa in recent years, reflecting Washington’s broader efforts to modernise consular services while maintaining strict immigration and security standards.

Prospective Nigerian travellers are advised to monitor official U.S. Embassy and Consulate communications for updated guidelines on visa appointments and application procedures.
