Reps Seek Consensus on Fuel Imports and Local Refining to Boost Energy Security
The House of Representatives has called for a national consensus on the future of fuel imports and local petroleum refining, urging key stakeholders to adopt policies that will strengthen Nigeria’s energy security, reduce dependence on imported petroleum products and promote sustainable economic growth.
Lawmakers stressed the need for collaboration among government agencies, regulators, refinery operators, oil marketers and industry stakeholders to develop a balanced framework that supports domestic refining while ensuring the uninterrupted supply of petroleum products across the country.
The House noted that increasing the capacity of local refineries would help conserve foreign exchange, create employment opportunities, enhance value addition in the oil and gas sector and reduce Nigeria’s exposure to fluctuations in the international fuel market. Members also emphasized the importance of encouraging investment in refining infrastructure to meet growing domestic demand.
The lawmakers maintained that while fuel imports may remain necessary in the short term, Nigeria should gradually transition toward greater self-sufficiency through improved refining capacity and policies that encourage local production. They urged the Federal Government to provide an enabling environment for both public and private refinery operators to thrive.
The House further called on relevant government institutions to ensure transparency, fair competition and effective regulation within the downstream petroleum sector. According to lawmakers, a stable and competitive industry would improve fuel availability, protect consumers and support long-term economic development.
Stakeholders believe that achieving a consensus between fuel importation and local refining will strengthen Nigeria’s energy sector, improve supply stability and position the country as a major petroleum refining hub in Africa.
