US Reaffirms Strong Security Partnership with Nigeria in Fight Against Terrorism
The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening security and counterterrorism cooperation with Nigeria, describing the West African nation as a critical partner in regional and global efforts to combat terrorism and violent extremism.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio highlighted the importance of sustained collaboration between both countries, emphasizing intelligence sharing, military cooperation, and joint efforts to address security threats across Nigeria and the wider Lake Chad Basin region.
According to Rubio, Nigeria remains a strategic ally in the fight against terrorism, particularly as extremist groups continue to pose threats to peace, stability, and economic development across West Africa. He noted that stronger partnerships between democratic nations are essential to confronting evolving security challenges.
The renewed commitment follows recent high-level engagements between Nigerian and American officials aimed at expanding cooperation in counterterrorism operations, intelligence exchange, defence capacity building, cybersecurity, and regional security initiatives. Both countries also reviewed strategies for addressing emerging threats linked to insurgency, organised crime, and transnational terrorism.
Nigeria has remained at the forefront of counterterrorism efforts in the Lake Chad Basin, where security forces continue operations against terrorist groups and criminal networks. American officials commended Nigeria’s leadership role in promoting regional peace and stability while pledging continued support for security reforms and capacity development.
The partnership has recorded notable successes in recent years, including joint intelligence-driven operations targeting terrorist leaders and networks operating across the region. Security experts believe enhanced collaboration between Nigeria and the United States will further strengthen efforts to curb violent extremism and improve regional security.
Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral relations through sustained diplomatic engagement, defence cooperation, and coordinated actions aimed at ensuring long-term peace, stability, and economic prosperity across Africa.
