Ugochinyere Condemns Court Ruling on Political Parties, Warns of Threat to Democracy
Member of the House of Representatives, Ikenga Ugochinyere, has criticized a recent Federal High Court judgment directing the deregistration of several political parties, warning that the decision could trigger confusion and undermine Nigeria’s democratic process.
Reacting to the ruling, Ugochinyere described the judgment as a dangerous precedent that could destabilize the country’s multiparty democracy if allowed to stand. He argued that political parties remain essential pillars of democratic governance and should not be arbitrarily removed from the electoral landscape.
The lawmaker maintained that the judgment raises serious constitutional and legal concerns, particularly regarding the powers of electoral authorities and the rights of registered political parties to participate in the democratic process. According to him, any attempt to implement the ruling without exhausting all legal options could create uncertainty within the political system.
Ugochinyere further stressed that democracy thrives on inclusiveness, competition, and citizens’ freedom to associate politically. He warned that reducing the number of political parties through judicial pronouncements could limit political choices available to Nigerians and weaken democratic participation.
The controversy followed a court decision ordering the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister five political parties over alleged failure to meet certain legal and electoral requirements. The judgment has since generated widespread reactions among politicians, legal practitioners, and election observers.
According to Ugochinyere, stakeholders should exercise caution and allow the judicial process to run its full course, including possible appeals, before any far-reaching action is taken. He emphasized that protecting democratic institutions remains critical as Nigeria prepares for future electoral contests.
Political analysts say the ruling could have significant implications for the nation’s electoral environment, especially ahead of the 2027 general elections, where political parties are already positioning themselves for major contests across the country.
The lawmaker called on relevant authorities to uphold constitutional principles and ensure that democratic freedoms are not compromised by actions capable of creating political instability.
