Atiku-Obi Alliance 2027: Fayose Questions Opposition’s Tinubu Strategy

Atiku-Obi Alliance 2027: Fayose Questions Opposition’s Tinubu Strategy

Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has questioned whether a possible political alliance between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi would be enough to change the dynamics of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.

Fayose, speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, September 15, argued that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would remain competitive even if Atiku and Obi eventually agreed to work together.

His comments come amid continuing discussions within opposition circles over the possibility of presenting a unified presidential challenge in 2027.

While Fayose expressed confidence in Tinubu’s prospects, his assertions remain political projections rather than established electoral outcomes, with the presidential election still months away and several political variables capable of changing before voting takes place.

According to the former Ekiti governor, the opposition could face an even more complicated contest if Atiku and Obi run separately, because their supporters would be divided among competing presidential candidates.

He maintained, however, that even combining their political forces would not automatically guarantee an advantage over the incumbent.

Fayose based much of his argument on expected voting patterns in the South-West, Tinubu’s home region.

He claimed the President could secure a five-to-six-million-vote advantage in the zone and questioned the political structures available to Atiku and Obi in states such as Ekiti, Osun and Ondo.

The former governor also projected that Tinubu could secure more than 12 million votes nationwide.

Those figures represent Fayose’s personal political forecast and not polling data or an official projection of the 2027 election outcome.

Beyond regional voting calculations, Fayose pointed to what he described as improvements in the economy and ongoing road infrastructure projects as factors he believes could influence voters.

The Tinubu administration has repeatedly defended its economic reforms as necessary for long-term stability, while opposition parties and critics have focused attention on inflation, living costs and the economic pressures facing households.

Fayose also introduced the North-South power rotation debate into his assessment of the coming election.

He argued that Tinubu completing another four-year term would represent the shortest route to returning the presidency to the North, compared with electing another candidate from either the North or South who might subsequently seek two terms.

The argument adds another dimension to the political calculations already developing around the 2027 contest.

Opposition groups have intensified discussions about cooperation and the possibility of reducing the number of candidates challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress.

However, questions remain over who would lead such an arrangement and whether leading presidential aspirants would be prepared to step aside for a consensus candidate.

Recent opposition discussions have increasingly focused on the mechanics of selecting a single candidate, with disagreements over leadership and the terms of any coalition still unresolved.

Fayose’s intervention therefore shifts attention from whether the opposition can unite to whether such unity can be translated into an effective nationwide electoral structure.

The former governor’s assessment is one of several competing political interpretations emerging ahead of 2027.

Ultimately, voting patterns will depend on factors including the candidates eventually presented by the parties, alliances and defections, economic and security conditions, campaign strategies and voter preferences at the time of the election.
