Anambra Child Abuse: Community Rescues 7-Year-Old, Police Arrest Mother

The swift intervention of community security personnel and concerned residents has reportedly saved a seven-year-old girl from further abuse in Anambra State, leading to the arrest of her 32-year-old mother.

The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the arrest of Mrs Ogechi Ofoma following allegations that she subjected her daughter, Oluebube Ofoma, to severe physical abuse at Obosi in Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.

According to the police, preliminary information indicated that the child sustained serious bodily injuries allegedly inflicted with a hot kitchen knife.

The incident came to the attention of authorities following intervention by security personnel from the Ibollo Community, Awada-Obosi, alongside concerned residents who reportedly rescued the child and facilitated the arrest of the suspect.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the command received the report on September 13 and immediately commenced action.

The police condemned the alleged treatment of the child and assured residents that the circumstances surrounding the incident would be thoroughly investigated, with anyone found culpable made to face justice.

Following the rescue, Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, initiated collaboration with the state Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare to ensure that the seven-year-old receives appropriate medical treatment, protection and necessary welfare assistance.

The command particularly praised community members whose vigilance brought the alleged abuse to the attention of security agencies, stressing the importance of public intervention in protecting vulnerable children.

Authorities maintained that the welfare, safety and best interests of the child would remain central as investigations continue.

The development has again drawn attention to concerns over violence against children within homes and the crucial role neighbours, communities and government agencies can play in identifying and reporting suspected cases of abuse.

The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development recently reiterated that parental authority should never be considered justification for violence, torture, cruelty or degrading treatment of children.

The ministry has also urged Nigerians who become aware of suspected child abuse to report such cases to law enforcement and appropriate child-protection and social-welfare authorities rather than remain silent.
