Tinubu Unveils Massive Rural Electrification Drive as 1,000 Mini-Grids Take Shape Across Nigeria

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to expanding electricity access across Nigeria, revealing that over 1,000 mini-grid projects are currently under development nationwide as part of efforts to bridge the country’s energy gap and accelerate rural development.
The President said the ongoing mini-grid initiative is designed to provide reliable and sustainable electricity to millions of Nigerians living in underserved and off-grid communities, while also boosting economic activities, education, healthcare delivery, and small business growth.
According to the Federal Government, the mini-grid projects form a critical component of Nigeria’s broader renewable energy and rural electrification strategy aimed at increasing access to affordable power while reducing dependence on fossil fuels and expensive generators.
The initiative is being driven through strategic partnerships involving government agencies, development finance institutions, private investors, and renewable energy developers. The programme is expected to support households, schools, hospitals, agricultural enterprises, and micro, small and medium-sized businesses across the country.
Experts believe the deployment of mini-grids will significantly improve electricity access in remote communities where extending the national grid remains economically challenging. The projects are also expected to stimulate local economies by creating jobs, supporting productive enterprises, and attracting investment to rural areas.
Recent implementation reports indicate substantial progress in Nigeria’s distributed renewable energy programme, with hundreds of mini-grid agreements already signed and numerous installations either completed or under construction. The initiative aligns with the government’s target of providing millions of Nigerians with improved electricity services through renewable energy solutions.
President Tinubu emphasized that energy access remains central to his administration’s economic transformation agenda, noting that reliable electricity is essential for industrial growth, poverty reduction, job creation, and national development.
Stakeholders in the energy sector have welcomed the expansion of mini-grid infrastructure, describing it as a practical solution to Nigeria’s longstanding electricity challenges, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach communities.
As implementation progresses across the federation, the mini-grid programme is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s renewable energy ecosystem while supporting the country’s broader goals of economic growth, energy security, and sustainable development.
