2027 Battle Takes New Turn as Obi, Baba-Ahmed Shift Spotlight to Tinubu’s Past RecordsPeter Obi

As Nigeria gradually moves deeper into the political season ahead of the 2027 presidential election, the battle for Aso Rock appears to be taking a new dimension, with opposition leaders increasingly shifting attention from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic policies and governance record to lingering questions surrounding his personal and historical records.

The latest offensive came from Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), and Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), who have criticised Tinubu over reported legal efforts to prevent the release of certain records held by United States law-enforcement agencies.

What might ordinarily have remained a legal dispute in an American courtroom is rapidly developing into another major political issue ahead of 2027.

From Economy to Transparency: Opposition Opens New Front Against Tinubu

For much of the political debate surrounding the Tinubu administration, opposition figures have concentrated their attacks on the removal of fuel subsidy, cost of living, inflation, insecurity and other economic challenges.

But the latest controversy suggests that the opposition may now be opening another front — transparency, accountability and the President’s personal records.

Obi argued that Nigerians deserve clear and verifiable explanations concerning questions surrounding anyone occupying the country’s highest political office.

According to him, leadership requires the willingness to confront questions about one’s history rather than allowing uncertainty to continue dominating public discussion.

His intervention comes as legal proceedings in the United States renew attention on records held by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other American agencies.

Tinubu’s Lawyers Cite Privacy Rights

However, the controversy has another important side.

Reports indicate that lawyers representing President Tinubu have argued that the release of certain records could violate his privacy rights.

That distinction is important because the existence of records held by a law-enforcement agency does not, by itself, establish criminal wrongdoing.

Tinubu’s supporters have similarly argued that information held by American agencies could include private or non-criminal material and that the President retains legitimate legal rights to challenge disclosure.

The dispute must therefore be separated from political conclusions until the courts determine what records may lawfully be released.

Baba-Ahmed Raises Governance Question

Baba-Ahmed introduced another dimension to the controversy by questioning the simultaneous absence of President Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima from Nigeria.

Speaking at a gathering of opposition political leaders in Abuja, the PRP chairman asked who was effectively in charge while both leaders were outside the country.

He also made allegations linking the President’s foreign trip to the legal battle surrounding the records.

That claim remains an allegation and should not be treated as an established reason for Tinubu’s trip without independent evidence.

Nevertheless, Baba-Ahmed’s comments show how quickly the controversy is moving beyond the courtroom and becoming ammunition in Nigeria’s increasingly intense 2027 political contest.

FBI Records Controversy Returns to Political Centre Stage

The latest dispute is not entirely new.

Questions surrounding records relating to Tinubu in the United States have surfaced repeatedly in Nigerian political debates, particularly around presidential elections.

The matter has now returned at a politically sensitive period as parties and presidential candidates prepare for another national contest.

For the opposition, the issue provides an opportunity to make transparency and accountability campaign themes.

For Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress, the challenge will be preventing the controversy from overshadowing their preferred campaign discussion around infrastructure, economic reforms, investment, revenue growth and other achievements of the administration.

Will Records Controversy Influence 2027 Election?

That remains the bigger question.

Nigerians will ultimately have to decide whether historical controversies, current economic conditions, infrastructure development, security, employment and competing candidates’ records should determine their choice in 2027.

Opposition politicians will understandably scrutinise Tinubu’s past. But the same standard of transparency should equally apply to every presidential candidate seeking Nigeria’s highest office.

If personal records, educational history, previous public service and financial accountability become campaign issues, Nigerians deserve the opportunity to examine the records of all candidates, not just the incumbent.

The 2027 election should therefore become a contest of verifiable records — what candidates achieved before seeking the presidency, what they promised, what they delivered and what they intend to do differently.

2027 Contest Getting Hotter

With political parties reorganising, opposition groups discussing alliances and candidates sharpening their messages, the latest controversy signals that the road to 2027 could be one of Nigeria’s most fiercely contested political battles.

For Tinubu, incumbency and his administration’s performance will inevitably come under scrutiny.

For Obi and other opposition leaders, criticism alone may not be enough. Nigerians will also expect them to present their own records, policy alternatives and convincing programmes for tackling the country’s challenges.

As the battle shifts from economic reforms to personal records, transparency and accountability, one thing is becoming increasingly obvious: the 2027 presidential campaign may ultimately become a battle over not only who has the strongest promises, but whose record can withstand the greatest public scrutiny.
