SDP Chairman Says Nigeria’s Problems Stem from Leaders Without Character
The National Chairman of the Social
Democratic Party (SDP), Shehu Musa Gabam, has attributed Nigeria’s persistent political, economic and security challenges to a deficit of character among the country’s leaders, insisting that genuine national transformation can only be achieved through responsible and ethical leadership.
Speaking during a public engagement, Gabam argued that Nigeria’s problems are rooted not in a lack of natural resources or human capital but in the failure of many leaders to uphold integrity, accountability and selfless service. He maintained that the country’s progress depends on electing leaders who place national interest above personal ambition and political considerations.
The SDP chairman stressed that effective leadership requires honesty, transparency, competence and a commitment to good governance. According to him, building strong institutions and restoring public confidence in government will require leaders who demonstrate discipline, credibility and respect for the rule of law while delivering policies that improve the welfare of citizens.
Gabam also urged Nigerians to become more active in the democratic process by supporting credible leaders with proven records of service. He said political parties must prioritise merit, competence and integrity in the selection of candidates, adding that leadership built on character is essential for sustainable development, economic growth and national unity.
The SDP leader reaffirmed his party’s commitment to promoting issue-based politics and strengthening democratic governance. He expressed optimism that Nigeria could overcome its current challenges if citizens and political leaders embrace accountability, patriotism and responsible leadership at all levels of government.
