Obasanjo: Abdulsalami Was Working on MKO Abiola’s Release Before His Death
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has disclosed that efforts were already in motion to secure the release of the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola before his sudden death in detention in July 1998.
Speaking on the events surrounding Nigeria’s transition from military to civilian rule, Obasanjo said former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar had initiated steps aimed at resolving the political crisis triggered by the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely believed to have been won by Abiola.
According to Obasanjo, Abdulsalami inherited a difficult political environment following the death of General Sani Abacha and quickly began consultations to restore national stability and reconcile aggrieved stakeholders. One of the key issues on the administration’s agenda was the release of Abiola, whose continued detention remained a source of national tension and international concern.
The former president explained that arrangements for Abiola’s freedom were progressing when the acclaimed winner of the June 12 election died unexpectedly while still in custody. His death shocked Nigerians and the international community, sparking widespread grief and speculation about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Obasanjo noted that Abiola’s death represented a major setback for many Nigerians who had hoped to see him regain his freedom and potentially play a role in the country’s democratic future. Despite the tragedy, he said the transition programme initiated by Abdulsalami eventually led to the successful handover of power to a democratically elected government in 1999.
MKO Abiola remains one of the most celebrated figures in Nigeria’s democratic history. His struggle against the annulment of the June 12 election and his ultimate sacrifice continue to symbolize the fight for justice, electoral integrity and democratic governance in the country.
Political observers say Obasanjo’s latest revelation provides fresh insight into the final days of Abiola’s detention and highlights the efforts made by the Abdulsalami administration to resolve one of the most contentious political crises in Nigeria’s history.
As Nigerians continue to commemorate Democracy Day every June 12, the legacy of MKO Abiola remains deeply woven into the nation’s democratic journey, serving as a reminder of the sacrifices that paved the way for the Fourth Republic.
