Nigeria Awaits FIFA Verdict Over DR Congo Eligibility Controversy
Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup aspirations now rest on a crucial decision expected from FIFA regarding an eligibility dispute involving the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The complaint was filed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), challenging the participation of several players fielded by Democratic Republic of the Congo national football team during the decisive African qualifying playoff.
Nigeria’s senior national team, the Super Eagles, were eliminated after a dramatic playoff encounter that ended in a penalty shootout defeat. However, the NFF has argued that multiple Congolese players may not have satisfied nationality and eligibility requirements under FIFA regulations.
Speaking on the matter, NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi expressed confidence that the federation has presented substantial evidence to support its petition. He stated that Nigeria is now awaiting the official ruling from football’s global governing body.
If FIFA rules in Nigeria’s favour, the decision could potentially reopen a pathway for the Super Eagles to remain in contention for a place at the 2026 tournament. On the other hand, a dismissal of the complaint would officially bring Nigeria’s qualifying campaign to an end.
Football stakeholders across the continent are closely watching the situation, as the outcome could set an important precedent for how eligibility disputes are handled in international competitions.
