Labour Party Consolidates Hold on Abia as Otti, Abaribe Secure 2027 Election Tickets
Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has emerged as the Labour Party’s governorship candidate for the 2027 general elections, further strengthening the party’s political dominance in the state ahead of another major electoral contest.
The primary election, conducted across the state and monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), produced Governor Otti as the party’s flag bearer after he secured overwhelming support from party members during the exercise.
The results were officially announced at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia by the Labour Party’s National Organising Secretary and Returning Officer for the exercise, Mrs. Oluchi Opara, who stated that the primary election was conducted in accordance with the party’s constitution and electoral guidelines.
Speaking after receiving his Certificate of Return, Governor Otti described his emergence as a renewed call to service and urged party members to remain united as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify. He emphasized that the task ahead would require commitment, discipline, and collective effort from all stakeholders within the party.
The Labour Party also produced several prominent candidates for National Assembly positions, including Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who secured the party’s ticket for another Senate bid in Abia South Senatorial District. Senator Darlington Nwokocha emerged as the candidate for Abia Central, while Chief David Ogba Onuoha secured the party’s ticket for Abia North Senatorial District.
For the House of Representatives, the party retained several serving lawmakers, including Obi Aguocha, Ginger Onwusibe, Amobi Ogah, and Alex Ikwechegh, alongside other candidates selected to contest various federal constituencies across the state.
The primaries also produced candidates for all 24 seats in the Abia State House of Assembly, signaling the Labour Party’s determination to maintain its political influence across all levels of governance in the state.
Party leaders described the exercise as peaceful, transparent, and largely free of controversy, noting that the successful conduct of the primaries reflects growing unity within the Labour Party structure in Abia State.
Political observers believe the emergence of Otti and other key candidates has positioned the Labour Party as a major force ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly considering the party’s strong performance during the 2023 electoral cycle.
Governor Otti’s administration has continued to attract attention through infrastructure renewal, governance reforms, and public sector interventions, factors many analysts believe could influence voter decisions as political campaigns begin to gather momentum.
With the conclusion of the primaries, attention is expected to shift toward campaign strategies, opposition responses, and broader political alignments that will shape the contest for power in Abia State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
