Jonathan’s 2027 Bid Sparks PDP Crisis
Fresh political controversy has emerged over renewed talks linking former President Goodluck Jonathan to a possible 2027 presidential ambition under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as internal divisions continue to rock the opposition party.
The debate intensified after a faction within the PDP reportedly attempted to project Jonathan as a potential presidential candidate despite ongoing legal and leadership disputes within the party structure. Political observers and party stakeholders have since questioned the legitimacy and practicality of such a move.
Reports indicate that the faction promoting the alleged arrangement is currently facing legal challenges over its authority and recognition within the party. Critics argue that any move to position Jonathan for the presidency under such circumstances may further deepen the PDP’s internal crisis ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido was among political figures who reportedly cautioned Jonathan against associating himself with unresolved factional battles within the party.
Political analysts also noted that discussions surrounding Jonathan’s possible return to active presidential politics continue to generate mixed reactions across the country, especially considering constitutional debates and public assessments of his previous administration.
Although Jonathan has remained largely silent on the latest speculation, his political relevance continues to attract attention within opposition circles searching for a strong national figure ahead of the next election cycle.
The former president, who governed Nigeria between 2010 and 2015, recently defended his administration against criticisms from political rivals, insisting that he gave his best while in office and acknowledging that mistakes are inevitable in leadership.
Meanwhile, analysts believe the PDP must first resolve its lingering leadership disputes and rebuild internal unity before discussions about potential presidential candidates can gain meaningful traction.
