APC Confirms Kashim Shettima as Tinubu’s Running Mate for 2027 Election
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has reaffirmed Vice President Kashim Shettima as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s running mate for the 2027 presidential election, effectively putting to rest weeks of speculation that the ruling party was considering replacing him on its presidential ticket.
The clarification follows widespread political rumours suggesting that the APC was weighing alternative vice-presidential candidates as part of its strategy for the 2027 general election. However, party leaders have maintained that there is no plan to drop Shettima, insisting that the Tinubu-Shettima ticket remains unchanged.
The speculation had gained traction amid political calculations over regional balancing and succession debates within the ruling party. Despite the rumours, APC stakeholders have continued to express confidence in Shettima’s loyalty, leadership experience and contributions to the administration since taking office in 2023.
Party insiders said retaining Shettima is expected to strengthen internal unity and preserve the political alliance that secured victory for the APC in the 2023 presidential election. They noted that continuity within the party’s leadership would provide stability as preparations for the 2027 polls gather momentum.
Political observers believe the confirmation will reassure party supporters, particularly in the North-East, where Shettima commands considerable political influence. The decision is also expected to shift attention away from internal speculation and allow the APC to focus on its campaign strategy ahead of the next general election.
