Ibadan Leaders Condemn Fayose’s Remarks on Olubadan, Warn Against Political Interference
The Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) has strongly criticized former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, over his recent comments concerning the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, warning him to stop involving the revered monarch in political controversies.
The council described Fayose’s remarks as provocative, unnecessary, and capable of creating tension in Ibadanland, insisting that traditional institutions should not be dragged into partisan political battles. The warning follows comments made by the former governor during a television interview, where he reportedly raised concerns about the position of the Olubadan in Oyo State politics.
In a statement issued by its leadership, the CCII expressed disappointment over Fayose’s continued references to the monarch despite earlier cautions. The group maintained that the Olubadan remains a highly respected traditional ruler whose office should be insulated from political disagreements and public disputes.
The council’s President-General, Chief Ajeniyi Ajewole, said Ibadan people would not allow anyone to use the traditional institution as a tool for political confrontation. He stressed that issues relating to the Olubadan and Ibadan’s traditional system follow established customs and should not be subjected to political speculation.
According to the council, attempts to associate the Olubadan with political conflicts could undermine the peace and stability for which Ibadan is known. The group urged political actors to exercise restraint and avoid statements capable of generating unnecessary controversy within the ancient city.
CCII further reaffirmed its confidence in the traditional institution and called on residents to disregard comments that could create divisions among the people. The council emphasized that Ibadan remains committed to preserving its cultural heritage, unity, and respect for the Olubadan stool.
The latest exchange is part of an ongoing debate sparked by Fayose’s earlier allegations regarding the Olubadan institution, claims that have repeatedly drawn rebuttals from stakeholders in Ibadanland and Oyo State.
