Aiyedatiwa Hails Legal Profession as Foundation of Democracy, Rule of Law
Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has described the legal profession as a critical pillar in safeguarding democracy, constitutional order and the rule of law in Nigeria.
The governor made the remarks during the commissioning of a newly built Bar Centre donated to the Ondo Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Ondo City by senior legal practitioner, Chief Tayo Oyetibo, SAN.
Speaking at the event, Aiyedatiwa stressed that strong institutions remain the backbone of every progressive society, noting that justice, fairness and constitutional governance can only thrive when the legal profession remains independent and courageous.
According to him, the legal profession occupies a sacred position in democratic societies because lawyers and judges serve as defenders of civil liberties, constitutional values and democratic stability. He warned that democracy could gradually lose its moral strength without a vibrant and fearless legal system.
The Ondo governor further described the newly commissioned Bar Centre as more than just a physical structure, saying it represents intellectual excellence, professional unity, institutional continuity and commitment to justice.
Aiyedatiwa commended Chief Tayo Oyetibo for donating the facility to the NBA branch, describing the gesture as a major contribution toward strengthening the legal profession and mentoring younger lawyers.
The Bar Centre is expected to serve as a hub for legal scholarship, professional development and intellectual engagement for lawyers in Ondo State and beyond. Facilities within the complex include a conference room, library, cafeteria, reception area, lawyers’ lounge and offices for legal documentation and activities.
In his remarks, Chief Oyetibo said the project was designed to deepen the administration of justice and improve the working environment for legal practitioners. He noted that lawyers remain custodians of justice and guardians of constitutional order.
Also speaking at the event, senior legal figures including Wole Olanipekun and Justice Moronkeji Ogunwumiju praised the initiative and called for continued investment in legal education and institutional development within the judiciary.
