Alaafin Of Oyo Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade Returns To Nigeria For Traditional Rites

The newly appointed Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, has returned to Nigeria from Canada in preparation for the significant traditional rites that will culminate in his official installation as the Alaafin on April 5, 2025.
Landing at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos at approximately 6:25 p.m. on Wednesday, Oba Owoade was met with a warm and ceremonious reception. The Special Adviser on Tourism, Arts, and Culture to the Lagos State Governor, Idris Aregbe, led the welcoming party, highlighting the importance and the royal stature of the event.
Oba Owoade’s return sets into motion a sequence of ceremonial and sacred activities that are vital to the cultural landscape of the Yoruba people. In adherence to age-old traditions, he will embark on a journey across Oyo town, visiting significant ancestral sites. During these visits, he will conduct various sacrifices and perform appeasements, some of which may necessitate overnight stays to fulfill traditional obligations during sacred night rituals.

Subsequent to these significant engagements, Oba Owoade will retreat into a period of seclusion known as ‘Ipebi’ within the confines of the royal palace. This phase is of paramount importance as it represents a period of spiritual cleansing and reflection, crucial for his preparation and transformation as he assumes his role as king.
The anticipation of these traditional rites accentuates the historical preservation and the immense cultural value associated with the institution of the Alaafin. It further solidifies the venerable tradition of the Oyo monarchy, underscoring its enduring legacy and influence within the Yoruba culture and beyond.
